The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine - Past and present

Lecture by Professor Ilan Pappe

Professor Pappe is one of the leading „new Israeli historians“. His latest book, „The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine“, Oxford 2007, has been translated into German („Die ethnische Säuberung Palästinas“, Frankfurt 2007).

Ilan Pappe was born in 1954 in Haifa, Israel. His parents fled from Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Pappe studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and graduated from Oxford University. Until 2007 he taught Political Science at the University of Haifa. Currently, he teaches at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom.

The „Israeli War of Independence“ in 1948 caused one of the largest forced migrations in modern history. Approximately 800,000 Palestinian Arabs were expelled from their homes at gunpoint, civilians were massacred and hundreds of Palestinian villages were destroyed. Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it would be described as „ethnic
cleansing“.

The lecture will be in English.
